Robert Yates Racing (RYR) was one of several Nextel Cup Series teams that participated in the NASCAR-sanctioned test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS). The test at Las Vegas was one of the only six tests in which teams will be able to take part in 2006. The Las Vegas test is considered by many to be the crucial pre-season test, as it is the first time teams are able to test all of the work done during the off season.
The new testing limitations require a complete team effort for RYR, according to UPS Team crew chief, Slugger Labbe.
"I had a list of things and Tommy (Baldwin, #38 team crew chief) had a list of things. So we did a few things opposite each other on the first day and then put everything together on Monday night and got on the same page Tuesday," Labbe explained. "Time is limited and testing is limited, so we have to make sure that we do different things and then put the whole package together as a team. With both our teams working together this way, we're able to accomplish a lot more in the same amount of time."
Both RYR teams participated in the first day of testing at LVMS. Divided into morning and afternoon sessions, both of the #88 UPS Fusion test cars and the pair of the #38 M&M's® Fusion test cars were among the top 15 cars. Sadler posted the second fastest lap of the morning with the #38a Fusion turning in a lap time of 31.872 seconds, a tenth-of-a second behind the fastest lap of 31.752 seconds, which was turned in by Jeff Green. Jarrett and the UPS Team worked on a pair of UPS Fords, #88a and #88b. They concluded the morning session 12th and 13th turning in lap times of 32.118 seconds/168.130 mph and 32.126 seconds/168.088mph, respectively.
The afternoon session proved even better for RYR as Sadler turned in the fastest lap of the afternoon with a time of 32.061 seconds and 168.429 mph. Jarrett's pair of UPS Fords finished the afternoon session seventh and eighth with lap times of 32.279 seconds/167.291 mph and 32.280 seconds/167.286 mph, respectively.
While Sadler finished the day on top of the chart, it was not without incident. Late in the day while trying out different grooves on the track, Sadler spun the #38 M&M's Ford Fusion, but kept the car off the wall.
"I was a little tight so I tried to use the apron to help the car turn and I learned that I shouldn't do that," Sadler said. "I'm glad I learned it now during practice rather than during the race."
During the second day of testing both Yates teams were further down in the running order, but were only working on race set up while many of the other teams worked on qualifying packages. The end result wasn't perfect, but Jarrett felt the team gathered useful information that will help them prepare for the down force tracks when that portion of the schedule starts with the race at California Speedway on February 26th.
"The biggest thing for us is that we made some gains while we were there," Jarrett said following the test session. "We weren't exactly where we feel we need to be but the cars handled well. I think between what Tommy and Elliott did with the M&M'S car and what we did with the UPS car, we have a good direction for where our program needs to be when we start racing at these one-and-a-half mile tracks."
Sadler echoed Jarrett's sentiment and praised the team's effort during the off season.
"We did a lot of winter testing and it looks like it has paid off," Sadler added. "We were pretty fast in both practices and we are very comfortable, and I think we have a good shot of coming back and running good. All of the hard work that the team had done has paid off."
