Motor Fails on UPS Ford in Closing Laps

September 17, 2006

Dale Jarrett was in position for a top-25 finish in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway, but the motor started failing during the final few laps, and the UPS Team dropped to 28th in the final rundown as the checkered flag waved.

After starting in the 37th position, Jarrett worked the #88 UPS Ford Fusion into the 26th position, just 45 laps into the 300-lap event, despite the tight handling conditions plaguing the UPS Ford. Following a couple of pit stops and some minor chassis adjustments, Jarrett found driving through the center of the corners much easier as he began to make up ground on the race leaders.

A caution for debris on lap 97 brought Jarrett into the pits as crew chief Butch Hylton started developing a strategy on fuel mileage. With fresher tires, Jarrett quickly moved from 26th to 23rd by lap 150. Shortly past the halfway point, however, a rub on the front fender forced Jarrett into the pits during green flag conditions, eliminating any advantage previously gained. Returning to competition one lap down to the leader, Jarrett scored in 32nd position.

On lap 208, Jarrett was one of the 11 drivers one lap down that did not pit during the caution, enabling him to get back on the lead lap as the front cars made pit stops. Restarting in front of the leaders at the tail end of the lead lap, Jarrett stayed near the front in hopes of securing the "lucky dog," and leaving New Hampshire with a decent finish. As the laps wound down, Jarrett kept pace and was in position to finish 23rd. The engine started to fail on the UPS Ford during the final five laps and he fell from 23rd to 28th, where he finished the event.

"The car wasn't terrible," Jarrett said. "We were just a bit too tight there at the beginning, but Butch (Hylton, crew chief) and the guys made some good adjustments and the car was pretty decent. We just had some bad luck there with the fender and any time you have to pit here under the green, it's tough to make up. On that last restart, I felt something start to let go in the engine department, but we were able to ride it out to avoid the DNF."

After qualifying 15th for the Sylvania 300, Jarrett's teammate David Gilliland was running in the top 15 before spinning on lap 97 and hitting the wall. Coming into pit road for repairs on the #38 M&M'S® Ford Fusion, Gilliland dropped behind the leaders by three laps, and finished the day in 36th position.

While several of those drivers competing in the Chase for the Championship encountered trouble, Kevin Harvick scored his fourth win of the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, and is now leading the pack of drivers contending for the 2006 title. He leads Denny Hamlin by 35 points.

The Chase for the Championship continues next weekend at Dover International Speedway with the running of the Dover 400. TNT will carry the live broadcast of the event, beginning with the pre-race show that starts at 12:30 p.m. EDT. The green flag is scheduled to wave at 1:10 p.m. EDT.
