Strategy and a little luck worked to the benefit of Dale Jarrett and the #88 UPS Racing Team, enabling the boys in brown to leave Dover International Speedway with a top-15 finish in the Dover 400 on Sunday.
Rain threatened throughout the early afternoon at Dover, with a few light rain drops falling during pre-race activities. The race started on time however, and Jarrett immediately set to work from the 34th starting spot, climbing to 29th by the time the first caution waved on lap three. Stopping for tires only during the second caution, Jarrett was out of sequence with a handful of the leaders and climbed as high as 10th before the fourth caution waved on lap 47. Adjustments made to the car during this caution period worked to the detriment of the UPS Ford Fusion however, creating a tight-handling condition that dropped Jarrett to 25th by the time lap 100 had been run, and he was down one lap by lap 150.
Despite scoring the lucky dog during the eighth caution on lap 208, Jarrett succumbed to the torrid pace set by Matt Kenseth during the middle part of the race. The ninth caution on lap 297 placed a number of cars that had started making green flag pit stops down one lap or more. The #88 UPS Ford Fusion was one of a handful of cars scored only one lap down and was thrust into the top-20, while many other cars fell to two laps down.
At the end of the day, Jarrett scored a 15th-place finish-his third top-15 in the last five races.
"The car got really tight there during the first part of the race and it just would not turn," Jarrett said. "Butch and the team made some good calls and we got a little lucky there at the end of the race with the way the cautions fell and got a top-15 finish."
David Gilliland and the #38 M&M'S® Team raced the Dover 400 in a backup car and started the race from the 39th position. Unable to overcome the deficit from the start of the race, Gilliland finished the event four laps down to eventual race winner Jeff Burton. He finished the day in 27th position.
Burton secured his first win of the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series season - and the first since winning at Phoenix International Raceway in November 2001. With the win, Burton took the lead of the point standings. He leads Jeff Gordon by six points after the Dover 400.
Kansas Speedway hosts the Nextel Cup Series next weekend for the Banquet 400 presented by ConAgra Foods. The event is scheduled for a 1:10 p.m. CDT start in Kansas City, Ks., on Sunday. NBC will provide the live broadcast of the event with their pre-race show that starts at 12:30 p.m. CDT.
