The Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway offered much of the same for Dale Jarrett and the UPS Team despite catching a lucky break early in the race. After starting 43rd, the team ended the night three laps down in 29th place.
A tight-handling race car dropped Jarrett and the #44 UPS Toyota down one lap to the leaders early in the 312-lap event. The UPS Team caught a break on lap 42 when the second caution of the race waved and Jarrett was the first driver one lap down. The team was awarded the "lucky dog" and placed back on the lead lap.
Tight handling conditions would persist for Team UPS however, and Jarrett went a lap down to the leaders again on lap 80. The event was slowed by cautions only six times during the evening, and as a result of all the long green-flag runs Jarrett and the UPS Team eventually lost an additional two laps to the leaders before the checkered flag waved.
"The car was never just right," Jarrett said after the race. "We finally got it there about halfway to a point where I could at least pass other cars that were having problems but again, it was never to the point where I could be aggressive enough."
Jarrett's rookie teammate David Reutimann and the #00 Domino's team competed throughout the duration of the event. After starting the race from the 25th position, Reutimann also battled handling conditions and eventually finished the race two positions behind Jarrett and the UPS Team in 31st place.
Jeff Gordon soared to his first win of the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series season by passing Tony Stewart in the final five laps of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 on Saturday night. The win was Gordon's first at the one-mile Phoenix track. It was the 76th win of his career, tying him with the late Dale Earnhardt for sixth on the all-time NASCAR win list. With the win, Gordon stretched his lead in the point standings to 70 points ahead of Jeff Burton, who currently sits second in the standings.
The second superspeedway race of the 2007 NASCAR season awaits the Nextel Cup Series next weekend at Talladega Superspeedway on April 29. FOX will provide live television coverage of the Aaron's 499 with the green flag scheduled to drop at 1 p.m. CDT.
