RIR Gears Up for Spring NASCAR Weekend

May 2, 2007

Richmond International Raceway (RIR) has long been a favorite track among many drivers, especially drivers native to Virginia. Since the race last fall, renovations have been made to build upon the track's reputation as one of the best on the NASCAR circuit. The most visible changes the fans will see when they return to the 3/4-mile track this weekend will be the expansion of the Commonwealth grandstand.

The new Commonwealth section is now a three-tiered grandstand with a seating capacity of 7,843 fans. The section also includes a brand new, state-of-the-art club level known as The Torque Club, which offers two full-service bars, buffet stations, private restrooms, more than 60 plasma TVs and outdoor seating for 700. Altogether the new project stands at a massive 180 feet tall, making it the tallest structure in Henrico County, Virginia. Admission to the Torque Club is available to the public on a season-ticket basis only.

Also new to fans for this weekend's race will be additional off-site parking options. RIR has launched two "Park & Ride" programs where fans can park their cars and RVs and receive a free shuttle ride to and from the track. Fans can either choose to park at The Showplace, located just three miles away at 3000 Mechanicsville Turnpike, or they can park downtown at the Richmond Coliseum near 7th Street. Parking fees for The Showplace parking lot will be $5 for cars and $25 for RVs, while parking at the Richmond Coliseum will cost $6 for cars only. Fans who want to learn more about these two parking alternatives are encouraged to visit the track's website at www.rir.com.

Singer Elliott Yamin will be in attendance to showcase his singing talents twice this weekend. He will perform the national anthem before Friday evening's Busch race, with a follow-up performance Saturday evening of "God Bless America." Yamin, a semi-finalist on last year's American Idol, grew up in Richmond since the young age of 10. In addition to his performances, Yamin is scheduled to make several fan hospitality appearances throughout the weekend.
