Reutimann Debuts as New "UPS Guy"

March 25, 2008

Dale Jarrett has been the guy delivering for UPS since the company debuted as a primary sponsor in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2001. This weekend, for the first time, the face of UPS changes when David Reutimann takes over the driving duties of the #44 UPS Toyota and becomes the guy charged with the task of delivering for UPS.

Reutimann Debuts as New UPS Guy

Reutimann is slated to make his debut as the driver of the #44 at Martinsville Speedway, a tough half-mile track that has proved challenging to the Florida-native in all three of NASCAR's top-touring divisions. Coming off a top-20 finish two weeks prior at Bristol, another short track, Reutimann looks to change his luck with a strong debut in the UPS Toyota.

While both are considered short tracks, the only similarity that Martinsville shares with Bristol Motor Speedway is its length. Martinsville is flat, versus Bristol's high banks, making it tough for drivers to pass. Its paper-clip shape is tough on equipment, especially brakes, as well as tough on its competitors, especially their patience.

"Coming to Martinsville makes you feel different than any other race track we go to. The pressure is definitely there, even if it's not a sponsor change and driver change," states Reutimann. "It's a tough place and you have to have a really good car and things have to go your way. Hopefully I can turn it around and make it one of my better race tracks."

This time at Martinsville Reutimann will lack a resource that he has counted on in the past in his veteran teammate Jarrett. While Reutimann has had this weekend circled on his calendar for months, with the anticipation of wearing the UPS uniform, he will miss the short walk to ask Jarrett for advice.

"Driving the 44 car...it's a huge deal," said Reutimann. "I'm happy to be associated with UPS and be a part of their program. I have a great relationship with them but it still really bums me out that Dale Jarrett's not going to be over in that trailer for me to run over and ask a bunch of stupid questions which he always answered. He's always taken time for me."

This year Reutimann is in his sophomore season of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition. After enduring the growing pains of a rookie season, he finds himself in a much more comfortable position as the Sprint Cup Series prepares for just the sixth race of the 2008 NASCAR season. At Martinsville, Reutimann will still have the support of his team and crew chief Ryan Pemberton who will also make the swap to the #44 UPS Team.

The Reutimann-Pemberton combination has been successful with the first five races in the books. Currently, Reutimann and his team are within the top-35 in the owner point standings which means the team is locked into the starting field for the upcoming Goody's Cool Orange 500. It is a position Reutimann finds himself in for the first time in his Sprint Cup Series career and he is prepared to take full advantage of the situation.

"We're going into Martinsville with a completely different mindset because we can go in and from the beginning concentrate on the race," Reutimann said. "We aren't going to be as stressed on Thursday night getting ready for Friday because so many times you didn't know if you were going to have to worry about much beyond Friday's qualifying session."

With the pressure to qualify off Reutimann can focus on the task at hand, to move the UPS Toyota Camry to the front of the field and continue to improve his team's position in the Series point standings. In addition, Reutimann recognizes that taking the seat of a former NASCAR champion adds extra pressure to his job.

"You're driving Dale Jarrett's car and he's been instrumental in getting me the opportunity to drive for UPS and be a part of that program. I don't want to go out there and disappoint certainly him or anyone else at Toyota or Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR). We have our work cut out for us and have a lot to do. You never go in to replace a guy like Dale Jarrett; you just go in there and try to drive a car he drove at one time. It's a pretty tall order and some big shoes to fill. We have that opportunity and I'm trying to make the most of it."

It's an opportunity that Reutimann looks to advantage of as he knows many eyes in the NASCAR garage will be focused on him looking for results. With the strong start to 2008 for Reutimann and his MWR Team, the timing couldn't be more perfect as he prepares to don the UPS brown and white colors for the first time.
